Ms. Celano


Welcome to Mrs. Celano’s  second grade class website. I love teaching second graders!

 I have 29 years of teaching experience spending 19 of those years at Edgemere Elementary School. I have an advance certificate for Baltimore County public schools qualifying me to teach in both elementary education and special education. I have taught students from grades pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. It is my honor to teach your second grader.


This Quarter in Math

Unit 1: Counting, Coins, and Combinations

Addition, Subtraction, and the Number System 1

In this unit students will:

  • Count and compare quantities
  • Compose and decompose numbers
  • Understand operations of addition and subtraction
  • Develop strategies for comparing, combining, doubling quantities, and taking quantities away
  • Achieve fluency with three sets of addition combinations
  • Develop visual images of quantities
  • Count, collect, and analyze data
  • Practice telling time

Unit 2:  Shapes, Blocks, and Symmetry

2D and 3D Geometry

In this unit students will:

  • Identify two and three-dimensional shapes
  • Focus on the properties of rectangles and rectangular prisms
  • Explore how different shapes go together
  • Experiment with geometric transformations (rotations, translations, and reflections)
  • Explore patterns
  • Continue to develop fluency with double addition combinations


This Quarter in Language Arts
Unit 1:  Friendship

1.  How do friends depend on each other? 

2.  How does describing how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges demonstrate and understanding of literary texts?  

3.  How do I name a topic, supply facts, and provide a sense of closure while writing informative text?

  Unit 2:  Cycles in Our Natural World

1.  How do different plants and animals grow, develop, and survive in our natural world?

2.  How does asking and answering questions demonstrate comprehension of informational texts?

3.  Why is it important to explain how specific images contributes to and clarifies a text?

4.  How do good writers use writing to clearly communicate their ideas to others?  

5.  How do I recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order and provide a sense of closure while writing a narrative?

Our class will be using Class Dojo this year. ClassDojo is a behaviormanagement tool for the classroom. Each student has a profile – complete with their own avatar – to which teachers can assign positive and negative points (or 'dojos') throughout the lesson. Students will use the following point system for behavior at the end of the day:

5-6 points= Student went above and beyond and had an amazing day!

3-4 points= Student had a great day and was focused on learning.

0-2 points= Student is determined to come to school ready to do their best the next school day.
